N.K. Robertson's book, Thrifty Salmon Fishing, published 1940s, has an interesting chapter on 'The Shannon Fisheries', offering a view on the effects of the Ardnacrusha scheme, along with attempted remedial action.

Around 1994, I met an angler who swore he hooked & lost a salmon on Lough key; perhaps an odd salmon continues to make its way there.

There are salmon up that way, Leitrim, roscommon, longford , Westmeath and Offaly. There's small numbers in tributaries of the shannon.
