As if things weren't bad enough with wild salmon numbers, escaped farmed salmon from Killary Harbour have now been caught from the Erriff, Dawros, Bundorragha (Delphi) and Owenmore in Co. Mayo, as well as the Corrib River in Co. Galway.
What will happen to the future populations of wild salmon in these rivers (and others)?
What will happen to the companies responsible and the government's overall approach to open cage salmon farms in Irish waters?
1% of Iceland's population came out in protest against salmon farms after a massive fish farm escape last autumn which has endangered their wild salmon population.
Where is the outcry here?
As Billy Smyth of Galway Bay Against Salmon Cages says, 'Enough is enough. Minister McConalogue, unsustainable open sea cage salmon farms must be shut down as soon as possible to save our wild iconic salmon and sea trout stocks. No more excuses.'
Even the Green Party is in favor of salmon farming & netting. Hypocrites.
